If you or know someone you love regularly drinks so called “energy drinks,” you’ll definitely want to read today’s feature article. It may save lives.
You have probably noticed the growing energy drink trend for the last few years. Whether it’s the sport drink soda type, or a small 5-hour energy type, people seem to be inhaling these drinks at record speed.
Lately, however, some of these drinks have been linked to severe heart attacks and other fatal diseases. And at least two types of drinks are under investigation by the FDA for killing over 18 people.
That’s why in today’s feature article, I’m going to name those brands, explain why they’re so dangerous and finally discuss the real underlying problem, which has nothing to do with the ingredients in these drinks.
Whereas traditional soda consumption is tapering off some, hard core “energy drinks” loaded with stimulants are growing in popularity. These “energy drinks” are often sold under the guise of being healthy. However, they are no better and can even be worse- than traditional sodas.
Many of those energy drinks are loaded with sugar, many times at the same levels as traditional sodas. They also (almost without exception) include an overload of caffeine and other chemicals.
One of the problems with many of those drinks is that they boost you up and then the energy wears off quickly with a low. You then have to consume another drink to continue.
Issues regarding safety concerns have been lurking around for quite some time. The FDA spokeswoman, Shelly Burgess, disclosed that 5-Hour Energy has been reported in more than 90 filings of adverse reactions since 2009. And over 13,000 emergency visits per year are related to “energy drinks.”
But it wasn’t till last month that the FDA disclosed they’re investigating the “Monster Energy Drink” for the deaths of five people. And now “5-Hour Energy” is under investigation related to 13 deaths.
Everyone is, of course, considered innocent till found guilty so I’m not going to crucify these two companies. The real issue is, why are we consuming such high amounts of these potentially lethal drinks?
The consumption of “energy drinks” has grown 17% in the last year alone, now topping $9 billion per year in sales. And although they seem to be doing their job of getting people ramped up, many of those drinks taste terrible. We know they’re not selling because they are delicious.
So the only reason anyone will use these drinks is because they’re too tired, or too rushed in the first place.
Over the past decade more and more of my clients are complaining about chronic tiredness. And almost all of them are caused by one or more of the following:
1) Lack of quality sleep
2) Lack of quality nutrition
3) Lack of physical activity
4) Too much stress / pushing yourself to far
5) Various chronic diseases / being overweight
6) Side effects from medications
These factors also interact with, and increase the seriousness of, each other. For example, lack of sleep causes stress and together these factors contribute to various diseases. A side effect of minimizing one disease with drugs intensifies the dangers of other conditions. Lack of physical activity leads to problems sleeping and other health issues. And we could go on and on.
The energy drinks are only symptoms of a much bigger problem. If you eat healthy, sleep well, exercise and avoid too much stress, you’ll feel energized naturally and will prefer healthy water over deadly energy drinks.
If you’re already suffering from various diseases, you can check out guidance to naturally eliminate them on the right hand side of this page. Lifestyle changes can cure diseases such as…

People are mixing energy drinks ans alcohol, and as you see just the energy drinks by it self are bad.
I regularly drink two energy drinks and work the night shift. I have a fast paced job which requires me to think fast. I can keep up the pace but thinking fast and accurately is a problem for me day or night. The energy drinks seem to give me an edge.
I tried this stuff once and will never do so again. The effects both during and afterward showed me that the drinks are dangerous in the extreme.
Energy drinks and alcohol – why didn't I think of that… Seriously, why not just eat some fruit, snack on a banana or something.. drink coconut water.. It would seem to me that people are simply getting lazier by the day and simply putting to much emphasis of everything else like work over there own well being..
Great article, Scott! I am glad to see someone out there telling the truth about some of the specialty drinks on the market. Seems like people would know, if it gives them energy; it’s got “something” extra in it, and it is likely lots of sugars, or, lots of “peppy” speed-like ingredients, which likely speed up the heart-rate, pulse-rate, and blood pressure; plus, add to stress and manic-like feverish activity coupled with depression like lows.
I hope there are lots of people reading your article this time around, Scott. Thanks for doing the research. georgia (I don’t drink energy drinks, but I did used to take “energy” pills, till my energy ran completely out). I have more sense now. Celebrate the Day!

I think energy drinks should be band.
Dear Mthr, I hope they don’t hit you, like the energy pills hit me. I am not sure I will ever recover any energy. I burnt the candle day and night, and enjoyed the feeling; now my health is shot, and likely from the abuse of using pills just to make me feel more alert, and be able to keep on keeping on, hour after hour, when I should have been working regular hours, eating right, and getting a night’s sleep, naturally! I am very ill; was always a workaholic. Wish I had taken time to “smell the roses”. Best wishes, Mthr. georgia
Tried a Monster when they 1st came out & felt like I was gonna die! Never again! A high protein breakfast along with chia mixed with water & supplements including quercitin & shilijit keep me going strong all day.
Well I drink some of the energy drinks when I have a certain job I need to get done quickly.I like the rush the expresso gives me I do not drink alcohol. There are people who do the energy drinks/ritalin and other substances and are being effective. These people do not realize it is not the drink it is the quantity. Most people just are too lazy to eat right and are tying to take short cuts and they are not taking responsibility for their behavior. Do not blame the drinks blame your own behavior.
Well said. In some countries these drinks are banned since they were found to contain a small amount of amphetamines. Unfortunately these drinks are for sale on open supermarket shelves alongside the usual fizzy drinks in the UK.
Lets drink fresh fruit juices.
I take 1 ounce 5-hourly eneregy drink for that extrat lift, and then only occassionally. I’ll bet that some folks take more than 2+ ounces daily, and then they wonder why they get sick, foolish mistakes, don’t blame the mfg. If you do dumb things expect the worse.
I tried one of these drink’s a few year’s ago – I had it at 3.00pm in the afternoon and I was still hyper at midnight – never again.
despite the bad health effects, why these mentioned energy drinks still on the market. what they are we waiting for?
keep on drinks?
Why does toxic crap come from or invented in Asia….. HFC, MSG, Aspartane, Energy drinks.
I am 59 years old. I have been drinking one daily 5-hour type energy drink in the morning for over 4 years without ill effects. In fact, I feel I have benefited. Not all energy drinks are the same. The 5-hour energy formula is a good formula (no sugar, plenty of B12 & B6 vitamins, amino acids, and a sensible amount of caffeine). It’s not a sugar-caffeine bomb like some energy drink formulas. The only thing I don’t like about the 5-hour energy formula is that it’s sweetened with sucralose. If you like energy drinks, use them intelligently and know the differences between various formulas (brands). And be in touch with your body to know when an energy drink would be helpful. Don’t abuse them. Be smart and use them appropriately if you do.
fruit juice is mostly high in fructose
Thank you for this article. Proper eating (not some weird diet), quality supplementation, snacks could be healthy smoothies, fruit, etc. Coconut water contains more electrolytes than any energy drink on the market, this will be an acquired taste for some people. Coffee or tea can be used with meals or snacks, however, caffine should be limited. Quality water is a great choice.
Let's face it. A large majority of people are using these "energy" drinks to recover from being out too late or drinking too much. Most of the time their body is dehydrated and if they drank the right kind of water they wouldn't need the crutch of an "energy" drink. The marketing has convinced people that these drinks are supposed to be healthy for them and give them energy. Instead, drink a high quality water since our bodies are about 70% water.
The people with bad experiences are likely misusing these drinks.
I travel for work, and have limited time to make some long drives.
I occasionally use 5-Hour Energy when I start to doze off. It serves to wake me up and allow me to finish the trip safely.
I usually drink half the bottle when I start to feel tired and the other half 1-2 hours later. I’ve never had any kind of bad reaction from the drink.
The risk of falling asleep while driving is MUCH higher than any risk from the occasional consumption of an energy drink.
I have telling people the same thing for A long time,I my self tried it, I really got the energy I needed to work. but I know it is extremely dangerous and would try not use it again.
We can come up with a lot of crap NOT invented in Asia: agent orange, DDT, nuclear bombs, Depleted Uranium weapons, alar. And BTW MSG is naturally occurring.
Never tried anymore than a mouthfull, too much of a lift in what seemed to be nrg but I think was really a sugar induced high as opposed to a lift in mind/body health, which can only be achieved through sensible diet and exercise combined with vitamin and mineral dosages combined with H2O over time.Water not out of the local mains water supply eithor, but a truly filtered H2O from a reliable source.
Many teens and young adults are the targets for these Toxic energy drinks. They are being set up for the top 5 diseases. Cancer, Heart Attacks, Diabetes, Alzheimer's and Obesity. The Toxic cocktail will cause the body to build acidosis of the blood to boost Oxidative Stress. google
( Toxic Energy Drinks wakeupgethealthy ) to learn the time of Energy drinks starting from the early 1900's to current.
I couldn`t see the name of these energy drinks , Can you tell me the names of these drinks because a friend may be drinking them and I would like to warn him.
Many thanks.
Dee
I figure the writer meant "imbibing" rather than "inhaling". Having your airways blocked by CO2 bubbles is likely to prove fatal, even if the other ingredients didn't kill you anyway.
