According to a recent Journal of Nature Medicine Study, one basic ingredient that’s the base of most common western diets, may be the main cause of rise in high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks.
The researchers studied the type of food most common in various countries worldwide. Wherever the consumption of this one ingredient was high, so were cases of high blood pressure, stroke and heart attacks.
What the Uganda study showed was that in populations where the average consumption of processed red meat per meal exceeded 70 grams, those were the locations where hypertension and deadly cardiovascular disease were the most prevalent.
The recommended serving size for red meat is generally accepted as the equivalent of just 2 strips of bacon. Many Western meals far exceed this, boasting 1/3 pound burgers with extra bacon, dripping with cheese.
While it is good to get optimum amounts of protein in the diet, doing it this way leads, according to studies, to an early grave. You don’t even have to suffer weight gain for the high blood pressure effects of the red meat to plague you.
The researchers recommended substituting red meat with white meat such as baked chicken. There are of course also many vegetables loaded with protein and healthy fats such as nuts and beans.
If you already have high blood pressure, there is a method proven to lower it no matter what diet you’re on.
The key word here is "processed" red meat. And I'd love to know exactly "who" established the recommended serving size per meal as the equivalent of two strips of bacon and exactly what information or study is that based on? Grass fed – unprocessed – beef has no such conditions or outcomes that I know of unless the grass the cows are eating are heavily fertilized.
Agreed Michael! This is a poorly researched article. I am surprised that it appears here at all!
A porterhouse steak cannot be considered "processed" except for the fact that it was cut from the side of beef and packaged.
what is "processed" red meat? – corned beef, pastrami, prepackaged burgers?
To me, if you add salt, preservatives and other additives, such as nitrites, then it is "processed". The article is not clearly explanatory as to the difference.
To eat red meat is simply cannibalism. That's all. I've loved to know this information, thank you, for I campaign against red meat consuming (forgive my English, please). That's an awful and horrible, and most of all, a cruel habit. Let us all stop eating the flesh of our brethren, processed or not processed!
Do you not all think that it's the additives and not the meat that are causing the biggest part of the problem eg. potassium nitrate which is the preservative in bacon, and the fact that most bacon available is only 87% pork.
Don't miss the red meat at all. More fresh veggies, more fresh fruit and nuts. And salmon…yum.
Disappointed with lack of information RE “processed” red meat, if lacking info why publish and who didn’t know about red meat overindulgance being not healthy??????
What rubbish. Consider the difference between the Maasi and Kikuyu tribes in East Africa. The former eat meat and milk from their cows and are athletic and lean. The Kikuyu are farmers who eat grain and are overwieght and suffer the whole range of western diseases.
We were born to eat meat ( not processed) and no study has ever found a direct link between lean meat, saturated fat and heart disease. Damage caused by stress and oxidisation from poor diet are to blame.
Nearly every surviving tribes globally (with the exception of Australian Aborigines) live long and healthy lives eating their freshly caught wild meat, berries and fruits.
Where did this information come from?
Read Perricone MD and Al Sears MD and a host of other anti ageing doctors to find out what really kills you. Stress, Lack of CoQ10 and Omega 3 fatty acids and overeating are the main culprits.
This is what one get’s for “Eating Voiceless & Harmless Gentle Animals”, stop this practice and change the way you do things and you will possibly live a more healthy life. I would suggest to stop eating any form of walking or flying creature altogether…..?
What is processed red meat??? And what wastage processed red meat eaten with?
My blood pressure, heart health, digestion, got better when I cut back on beef and pork. And begin eating moree fish, salmon, sardines, chicken, tuna.I have a hamburge 4 oz thice a month, bacon two pieces twice weekly. Americans overeat with double burgers ,large coke, and large fries. Your system was not made to digest all this red meat and junk food and it is just as bad foir your health as smoking a few packs a day. If you do both you can say helo to an early grave.
Not enough information. Does 70g of red meat per meal mean one meal a day or three meals a day? Also, is fresh stewed/roasted organic beef and lamb counted as “processed” red meat?
What are these blood pressure exercise??
sORRY i CANNOT AGREE WITH YOUR SURVEY. rED MEAT IS FAR BETTER FOR YOU THAN CHICKEN ,THAT IS IF THE MEAT HAS FAT REMOVED.
EATING CHICKEN IS AN ANIMAL
the old testament in the bible in the first chapter tells you, you may not eat the swine people i knew who used to eat pork died in their late 40s & 50s
earlier in life our parents ate lamb& beef but we never knew or thought about the animals that it all had come from horrible cruel deaths to these lovely animals that had to have they suffered. cows are nothing but an overgrown puppy dog i learned a lot later in life &i stopped eating meat as every time i see raw flesh i shudder & think what savage human has killed this poor animal, did it die in peace or agony & i think we if people would stop killing animals & those people who live off the
cruel deaths of animals the world would be a better place without these people , & when its time for these people to leave this life they certainly will never have a place in the peace of heaven theres no place in heaven for people who have made animals suffer , i believe you are judged by your kindness to dumb animals have a loving heart for all animals & birds, as
they are gods gift to us to care for not to fill the animals with terrible fear & suffering. as people have done so they will be judged !!
we were given many fruits & nuts & vegetatables huge melons many grains to cook.green veges berries no need for humans themselves to be the graveyard of animals. the breeders of animals getting money for flesh are certainly doomed & theres no heaven for them they will be treated to never ending hell.there no reson to eat our beautiful animals just mans greeedy nature. &profit to unfeeling breeders.
Mary; our “meat” comes from abused and crowded and fattened animals, fed corn and carbs made in a way to “fatten” animals. We eat a lot of foods too, which are primarily used for ‘FATTENING” animals for our dinner tables. These “fattened” animals have more fat, less lean than any African ever ate. Their animals are no fattened, and they are healthier for them to eat, than our Beef, Pork, Chickens, Lamb, Bison, Turkey, etc. Our country allows the raisers of these animals to use feed other than what the animals would naturally eat. That is why our beef is not healthy to eat. Our produce is also stunted and does not have the natural attributes it would have, if grown under “natural” conditions and the soil not depleted of the nutrients produce used to have, but do not have now; meaning, we are not getting the nutrition necessary from most of the foods we eat. Cattle graze on grasses naturally, and find places to “lick” for salt and minerals. Our animals are kept in small fenced in areas where there is “no” grass! They are not allowed to move about freely, because this would toughen the meat, and cause them to be more lean than the company wants them to be who will be reaping the profit from selling the cattle. Farmers were sold out to big industry, ranchers were sold out to big industry. There are fewer and fewer farmers and ranchers, who “used” to allow animals and produce to get what was needed by their practices of letting ground lay fallow for some time, and rotating crops. Animal husbandry is not what it used to be. Our government supports huge commercial farms and commercial ranching, Interprises! Our world progress in these areas is hurting our health, and killing us all!
Georgia, with all the bad news; I do not believe these practices are “stoppable”. Maybe we can return to some of the healthier practices of raising feed animals and healthier and more natural produce. Maybe
addendum: All of the above is besides the point that we eat larger servings now, and more of the less healthy items are what people want to eat, so they turn their noses up at the looks of “green” veggies, and food items that might have to be chewed a little more than we like to chew. Ever watch the people who are picking their food items from an open bar? See any small helpings around? See people choosing salads, and different veggies besides pastas and white rice and mashed potatoes with cream gravy? I am sure some of the diners are choosing healthy items, however, I see little restraint there. My health caused me to “have” to make healthy choices. Unfortunately, it was too late to help a lot . . . or maybe it did help; I might be dead now if I had not switched my entire diet to one more healthy for me and for people in general. I gave up most of what I did eat, many years ago. I eat a normal well rounded meal now, with small helpings of whatever I choose to eat. I do not eat beef or red meat. I eat more cold water fish, more low carb veggies, more salads, no dressing, less bread, no white flour, no white rice, no mashed potatoes and seldom eat something sweet. Now I do not even what those foods and I enjoy the variety I do have. Good luck to all of you who want more fun and a longer life! georgia
We have 32 teeth. 4 are canines, that is DESIGNED to tear meat.About half the rest are designed to either chop vegetables or grind grain. This pattern is the same inn the teeth of very early mankind as seen in archaeological digs.It seems to me that God,or Nature,designed/evolved that way in proportion. So the fractions of our diet,on that basis, should be one-eighth meat, and 7/16ths grain derivatives(bread, porridge etc) and 7/16ths vegetables. OK ?
I find that when I have any form of beef , my head becomes so sore. My blood pressure raises. Black pepper , food fried or any ready made processed food upsets me. I have to eat my own prepared meals. Loads of olive oil, garlic , fresh fruit and salads.
