Typically, the states that have mountains, lakes, and abundant state parks are the ones with the best overall health of residents, but not in this one western US state.
And the cost of “treating” only two of the myriad of diseases is running in the hundreds of millions. In today’s short article we’ll look at a small case study about just how much money it costs to treat chronic disease.
While Colorado holds the record as the state that shows up in the number one spot year to year for health markers of its residents, its west-door neighbor has found itself in the hot seat for poor health.
Utah has earned the distinction of one of the top-spending states on treating preventable disease, according to studies done looking at data from the Utah Department of Health.
More than $110 million is spent treating high blood pressure alone. And guess what? High blood pressure is only the SECOND worst problem in Utah.
The top health budget criminal? Diabetes. Over $200 million is spent on treating a little less than 50,000 individuals.
According to Health Department data, more than 1 in 4 Utah adults suffer from high blood pressure. Considering that the national trend is closer to 1 in 8, it bodes poorly for a state that boasts such outdoor activity potential as lakes, mountains, state parks, and other attractions.
The problem is worse with the lower income residents. Experts in the state commented that it gives them focus to begin initiatives in specific areas of the state to get the problem under control so heart disease, stroke, and heart attack can be prevented, which all happen with chronic, uncontrolled high blood pressure.
The sad fact is that almost all of those people could lower their blood pressure and cure their type 2 diabetes using low cost, or free, natural approaches. The proof is in the eastern neighbor Colorado where lifestyle choices are much more favorable.
Hey, Utah… what would you do if you saved $300 million a year? Hey, rest of the world… what would you do if you saved trillions per year? Please comment below.

Very surprising. I believe Utah has pretty strict controls on alcohol consumption etc. So must be other lifestyle factors at play.
Lots of great advice and insight from your readers
Good advice from your readers gotta love intelligent people.
It’s like Big Tobacco doesn’t pay the medical costs of smoking, so the fast food industry doesn’t pay the medical costs of the bad diet they promote. Vested interests which promote high fructose corn syrup and other sugars and seed oils like sunflower and canola oils and margarines don’t want people to make the connection, for obvious reasons.
Are sites like this are the only way enough people will get the message? Good food is already inexpensive so why buy even cheaper rubbish? All it does is book you in for bad health outcomes down the track and ruin government budgets trying to cope.
What about the effect of fracking on the water, not just in Utah but all across America. If the fracking and its ill effects escalate, Utah might just lose its title of the worst state with the biggest bill as other states catch up as the quality of the toxin filled water decreases over the years. Big Tobacco, fast food may be nothing compared to the insidious effect of this kind of mining.
Admirable!
