Statins Give “Illusion” of Heart Benefits (and steal credit from lifestyle changes)Have you ever had the experience where something you did was incredible and extremely beneficial and someone else took all the credit?

Frustrating, isn’t it? Well, it works the same way in health, unfortunately.

Pharmaceutical giants would have you believe that the steady and impressive drop in deaths due to heart disease is solely due to the use of their statin products, distracting the public from the REAL reason health in this area is improving.

Makers of a drug class called statins, used for high cholesterol, want the world to think their product is the reason for the decline in deaths due to heart disease.

However, researchers at Liverpool University studied trial data to determine the true reasons behind the drop in heart disease-related deaths recently.

Deaths due to heart disease fell by 38,000 between 2000 and 2007, and even though statin makers want you to think it’s because of the steep rise in the use of the drugs, the study found that almost all of the difference can be attributed to lifestyle changes.

Among the life-saving changes the study authors noted was the steep drop in numbers of smokers, as well as diet changes.

Awareness campaigns that educate people on the dangers of certain lifestyle choices like alcohol use, smoking, consumption of fast food, and other risk factors have had an enormous impact worldwide on peoples’ habits.

While heart disease continues to be the #1 killer in almost every developed country in the world, the drop in overall rates of death attributed to heart disease has been encouraging.

Now, managing cholesterol levels is important. But not in the way the statin drug sellers will want you to think. It’s not about forcing your cholesterol down but more about clearing the plaque buildup in the arteries.
