This Work Habit Doubles Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke (stop doing this)You may think that the work habit that causes heart attack and stroke is pollution-related, night shifts, stress-related or something like that.

But that’s not the real problem. It can be in any workplace. And you most likely are, or have at some point, done this.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine reveals how one specific work habit almost doubles your risk of heart attack and stroke. If you want to live, you absolutely have to stop this work habit.

The study conducted by researchers from the College of Medicine in Seoul National University, South Korea, revealed how long working hours are closely related to bad cardiovascular health.

The data was obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 8,350 participants, aged 19 years and older.

Several factors were recorded for the analysis including working hours, blood pressure readings, cholesterol levels, fasting glucose levels, diet, exercise, smoking habits, and alcohol consumption. Using this data, individual’s risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD) in the next 10 years was calculated.

Not surprisingly, the study revealed that the longer the working hours, the higher the risk of developing CHD. But just how steep the connection was surprised everyone involved.

Those who worked 61 – 70 hours a week had a 42 percent higher risk of developing CHD compared to those who worked 31 – 60 hours. Among those who put in 80 hours or more a week, the risk shot up above 94 percent.

Now, we might assume that those who worked less than 30 hours a week would be at lesser risk. But surprisingly, they actually had both higher blood pressure and cholesterol than those working 31-60 hours. Indicating higher risk of CHD in the next 10 years.

This is just further evidence that stress is the main cause of high blood pressure and heart attack. Working long hours increases all types of stress. We’re talking physical stress (work), mental stress (work related challenges), emotional stress (the boss), and sensory stress (loud workplace).

Since we can’t always avoid stress, we absolutely must take action to remove the accumulated stress from our bodies. To do that, we have to give our system something I call a Focused Break.
