This “Unhealthy” Drink Protects You From Heart Attack if You Have High Blood PressureNow isn’t this everyone’s dream; to be able to indulge in something completely unhealthy and reap great health benefits from it?

Even better than consuming unhealthy things to prevent heart attack, how about if it was extremely fun as well?

Well, you may or may not agree with this, but researchers from the School of Public Health at Wuhan University in China have revealed how this “unhealthy” drink actually turns out to be darn healthy when it comes to your heart. Especially if you have high blood pressure.

The analysis study combined data from nine different previous studies involving about 400,000 people with high blood pressure.

The researchers recorded alcohol consumption and then compared that to incidence of heart attacks, heart disease, stroke, and death due to any other causes.

They divided the people into 4 groups based on alcohol consumption. From no alcohol consumption to a heavy alcohol consumption (over 30 grams of ethanol per day). For reference, a five ounce glass of wine contains 14 grams of ethanol.

The risks of heart disease and heart attacks went down as the alcohol consumption increased. But only up to a point. Heavy drinkers did not benefit anything from excess alcohol consumption.

In fact, the best effects were observed in the group that had occasional drinkers, who consumed 8 to 10 grams of ethanol per day on the average. The risks were higher in those who drank excessively as well as those who didn’t drink at all.

Is this good reason for non-drinkers to jump on the bandwagon?

Absolutely not! Since this is an observational study, all it does is analyze the effect of alcohol on people with high blood pressure. It doesn’t really estimate how good alcohol is for overall health.
