This Controversial Drink Reverses Type 2 DiabetesThe debate about this popular drink has been going on for decades. It’s been claimed to have miracle health benefits. Improve everything from high blood pressure to arthritis and everything else.

Others call it pure poison that raises blood pressure, causes stress and inflammation in the body and should be avoided at all cost.

So researchers from Harvard School of Public Health headed out recently to separate facts from fiction about this controversial drink and the rumor it could cure Type 2 Diabetes.

Many previous studies have proved the benefits of coffee in reducing the risk of developing diabetes.

This study conducted in Harvard School of Public Health, for the first time, investigates what happens when people either increase or decrease their coffee consumption over a period of 4 years.

The question they were trying to answer was: “should you increase your coffee consumption to prevent or improve type 2 diabetes?”

The team used data collected from three different sources: 48,464 women in Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Nurses’ Health Study, 47,510 women in Nurses’ Health Study II and 27,759 men from Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Diet pattern was analyzed for every four years while medical and lifestyle changes were reported for every two years.

Over the study period, 7269 participants developed type 2 diabetes.

The study results revealed that both increasing and decreasing coffee consumption had an impact on the risk of developing diabetes. But in opposite way:

– Those who increased coffee consumption more than a cup a day had a 11 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

– On the flip site, those who DECREASED their coffee consumption by more than a cup saw a 17 percent INCREASE in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The reason why coffee has so many health benefits is due to its antioxidant content. Particularly, one bioactive compound called chlorogenic acid, which is known to improve glucose metabolism.

So yes, if you’ve already developed type 2 diabetes, increasing your coffee consumption can be very beneficial to reverse it. And if you don’t have type 2 diabetes or have pre-type 2 diabetes, coffee may very well be the thing that steers type 2 diabetes away.

More is however not always better. Previous studies have found health benefits of coffee by consuming up to 6 cups/day. After that, it begins to be more harmful than helpful. Strongest benefit has been found by consuming 2-4 cups/day.
