Apple a Day Keeps Cholesterol at BayBold claims out of Oxford University in Great Britain recently assert that there may be something to the old rhyme of “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

Not only will it save lives, it can actually eliminate the need for statins and other cardiovascular drugs. But there is a catch.

Researchers at Oxford University’s British Heart Foundation Health Promotion Research Group concluded from a recent study that eating apples isn’t just a healthy choice to include in your diet every day- it may actually save your life.

In their bold claims, researchers suggested that in the UK alone, at least 8,500 deaths from heart attacks and stroke could be avoided annually if everyone over the age of 50 would just start eating apples. Including one additional serving of fresh fruit or vegetable hiked the number of possible lives saved to over 11,000.

In their research, the scientists looked at the benefits provided by apples, and found that they can produce very similar effects to the most widely prescribed statin drugs, but without the risk of dangerous side effects like liver disease and some cancers.

Their work was based upon studies of health records of over 100,000 patients, finding comparable stroke and heart attack mitigation to the most widely prescribed drugs, without any of the risk of side effects.

The only problem, say researchers, is compliance. For some reason, it is still easier for many people to pop a handful of pills every day AND suffer all the ravaging side effects than to eat one additional piece of fruit a day.
