A small but significant study conducted by Mayo Clinic researchers reveals yet another disturbing Type 2 diabetes complication.
This complication increases the bone fracture traumas as well as bone density decline in type 2 diabetes sufferers.
Researchers conducted a study involving 60 women, of whom 30 were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
They used a new medical device called an Osteoprobe to determine the hardness of a bone or deformation.
Researchers performed tests on the tibia bone that literally caused the bone to have a microscopic crack. This unusual test allowed them to measure the strength of the bone.
The results of the study showed that women who had type 2 diabetes had a significantly lower bone strength compare to women that did not have type 2 diabetes.
According to researchers, this could be explained by the fact that type 2 diabetes sufferers have experienced years of raised sugar levels that affected their bone durability.
