As is the case with so many of the most popular prescription drugs out there, sometimes managing one condition causes another one to develop. And, some of these side-effect conditions can be very dangerous.

And so it is with type two diabetes, and its relationship with one of the most popular and widely prescribed drugs on the market today.

In a recent study published in the journal, BMJ, statin drugs have been proven to cause type two diabetes in many patients who take the medications.

[adrotate group=”5″]The Canadian study looked at over 471,000 patients to uncover the actual seriousness of the diabetes link, because data on this particular side effect is often pretty scarce.

This is one more link in a body of studies proving this serious side effect of Statins. And it’s especially scary as Statin prescriptions are on the rise.

Recent analyses published in Forbes showed that in 2007 more than 200 million prescriptions were written for statin drugs. By 2010, it had jumped to 4 billion. That is some boon for the business of selling pharmaceuticals.

Studies published in Finland, and even at the Harvard School of Public Health maintain that it’s an “acceptable risk,” based upon the benefits. However, studies done at those very universities also have shown that statin drugs do nothing to reduce risk of a heart attack for those with high cholesterol.

So the controversy around cholesterol and cholesterol drugs continues. One thing, however, that everyone agrees on is that if you want to lower cholesterol, the best way to do it is with diet and lifestyle changes.
