A new 16 year study involving 350,000 people and published in the Diabetologia Journal shows that by drinking only one 12-ounce serving of a very common drink, you are putting yourself at a 22% higher risk of developing and drastically worsening your type 2 diabetes.

This same drink has been proven to worsen high blood pressure, cause obesity and myriad other health issues. But there seems to be no stopping this drink’s popularity.

Statistics related to the sale of soft drinks throughout the world are staggering – with sales figures reaching the $300 billion mark on an annual basis. But what are these drinks doing to your health?

Researchers recently conducted an impressive study on about 350,000 people based throughout the UK, Denmark, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, focusing their attention on the amount of sugary drinks that they consumed on a regular basis, among other lifestyle choices.

Approximately 12,000 subjects developed type 2 diabetes between the years 1991 and 2007. These results showed researchers that by consuming only one 12-ounce soda per day, individuals had an 18% higher chance of developing diabetes within a period of 16 years than those who didn’t.

It’s also interesting to note that those who drank two 12-ounce servings per day had an 18% higher risk of having a stroke than those who only drank one.

The study took into account the fact that individuals with high sugar and fat diets are generally overweight – this means that the high risk isn’t simply to do with the increase in weight.

Those who were both overweight and consuming a 12-ounce drink per day were actually putting themselves at a 22% higher risk for developing diabetes.

The scientists also took certain risk factors such as age, fitness levels and daily calorie intake into account before finalizing the results. This is because these factors also put someone at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes, so they needed to be ruled out before accurate results can be obtained.

Being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes isn’t the life sentence that most people believe it is.
