The ravages of uncontrolled hypertension, or high blood pressure that isn’t well-managed, extend far beyond a little arterial damage.
In a study published in the Lancet-Neurology, researchers looked at MRI scans of men and women as young as 39 who had high blood pressure or were borderline, also called pre-hypertensive.
What they found was that untreated high blood pressure causes irreparable damage in the brain, and not only to the grey matter.
The scans reflected damage had occurred in the white matter as well, indicating that the problems high blood pressure can cause are wide spread and occur much earlier than previously thought.
When considered in the context of research that shows how Alzheimer’s and other dementia types are increasingly linked to the damage done in the brains of chronic hypertension sufferers, the message is clear. Getting blood pressure under control doesn’t just ward off heart disease and stroke- it is appearing more and more to be a preventative step to premature brain aging.
