If you’ve been told that you need to get more active in order to get your metabolic diseases like high blood pressure and high cholesterol under control but are unsure which form of exercise is the most efficient way to get the job done, then you might want to look at study results out of 3 different universities that all point to the same pastime.
Researchers in Europe- at 3 completely different universities- published study results that point to one form of exercise that seems to win out over most all others at getting high blood pressure under control.
The Universities of Copenhagen, Exeter and Gentofte Hospital all found that soccer (or football, as it is known globally) is the best physical pastime compared to other forms of exercise when lowering high blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight.
They studied men between the ages of 33 and 54 and discovered that in the soccer-playing group, the systolic blood pressure (top number) drop was double that of the groups that chose a different activity as prescribed by their general practitioners.
Those that had soccer instruction and regular soccer activity saw an average of 10 mm/Hg drop while the other groups only averaged a 5-point drop.
The easiest natural way to eliminate high blood pressure- without drugs- that ANYone can use, even if you can’t exercise or play soccer…
Great article.
AND THE REASON ITs SOCCER…..IS BECAUSE ITS THE CLOSES THING TO DOING WIND SPRINTS…WHICH IS STILL TODAY EVEN AFTER OVER 30 YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC BACKING IS STILL THE BEST WAY TO GET INTO SHAPE AND LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE…:-)
I am 65years old and recent tests taken for cholestrol indicated that my reading is 6.2, in your recent article you indicated that the one sport to participate in is soccer. Please tell me what do you suggest which exercise will help with my circumstances.
Thank you
Soccer is not really the best choice – its really hard on your knees. I was a good soccer player playing right through college and representing the companies I worked for but a knee injury put paid to that. Before starting soccer, make sure you are in decent trim, decent fitness, decent knee strength and warm up carefully. The main thing really is that in any sport, violent moves should be avoided but the main thing to increase fitness and in turn overall health improvements are to make sure that you achieve that 60 -70% max heart rate (MHR = 220 -age)) for a reasonable amount of time, then you start to see benefits of exercise otherwise its no better than merely takng a stroll.
I am 60 don't care for running of any kind.
Football is a game for younger people.50 year olds playing football in any type of competition will find themeselves getting injured .One has to be fit in order to obtain any satisfaction participating in this sport. If you are talking about a ‘kickabout’ then that is something totally different!!
Aloha, I am a person who has had knee surgery on both knees as a result of being diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter disease. I am also the former celebrity chairperson for the American Heart Associations-Hawaii chapter Jump rope for heart campaign. Shortly after that surgery in my late teens, I developed New Jump Swing. A jump rope exercise program that emphasizes swinging the rope for at least a third of the time as well as moving while jumping. I invite you to investigate the program at http://www.newjumpswing.com/new_jump_swing.html. I will turn 60 years old this year, I’m still jumping and swinging.
I like and appreciate the brutal honesty of your comment Gene. Personally. I like to move around a bit, but I think that there are many paths to wellness, fitness and "being togetherness"
Playing Football may not necessary have to be competitive to be of health benefit, yet precaution is a rule for those above 50. Yea! heart rate need to be monitored. For physical activity to be of health benefit, it must be at least, for 10 minutes-lowering BP using soccer inclusive.
I don’t think that I will take up soccer at my age!! The children in the neighborhood would have a good laugh, so perhaps that would have some benefit after all as laughter is the best medicine!!!
If you do the 5 Fountain of Youth excercises every day they will keep your body supple and help avoid arthritis and high blood pressure. It doesn’t matter what your age is, they are easy to do. You gradually work up to doing each one 21 times. They are fantastic.
Soccer is a crap sport. Our stupid government wasted $45 million dollars trying to get the world cup here, one vote, how shameful. We couldn't even get a team to the olympics, lol. It should be banned in Australia. Plenty of other sports to play for health.
