A recent study out of Spain looked at the results of a different kind of red wine when men with high blood pressure drank it over a 4-week period.

The good news is this kind of wine eliminates the only criticism that “wine treatment” for health has received.

One of the components that gives red wine its rich flavor is the alcohol. However, Spanish researchers have found that the same benefits of traditional red wine can be found with the non-alcohol version as well.

Men with high blood pressure were followed over a 4-week period and were asked to drink moderate amounts of non-alcoholic red wine every day. At the end of the study, both the systolic and diastolic (top and bottom) numbers were reduced.

There are two components in red wine that are believed to contribute to good blood pressure health: nitric oxide and polyphenols.

[adrotate group=”5″]Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, meaning it naturally dilates the blood vessels, easing blood pressure.

Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants that help eliminate dangerous free radicals in the blood.

The interesting dynamic that other researchers want to study more, and what they liked about this study, is that while giving synthetic nitric oxide and polyphenols in supplement form seem to have no effect on blood pressure, they do when they are naturally occurring in red wine.

In the past, researchers considered that the alcohol in red wine played a part in the effectiveness, but the Spanish study with non-alcoholic wine contradicts this theory, which is encouraging, since not everyone can, or should, have alcoholic beverages.

In this way, those people are now able to have the benefits without the risk.
