If you are taking medication for lowering cholesterol and you are concerned about the side effects of it, you might want to check out the insert in your medication’s packaging.
Warnings were added earlier this year, but you won’t know it since they don’t have to tell you that the FDA has issued the new requirement.
Earlier this year, in February, makers of statin drugs including generic simvastatin started including in the warnings of side effects a little-known effect just newly recognized: memory loss.
Reports and complaints had been coming into the FDA for some time before independent studies were conducted and any action had been taken.
The most recent complaint of side effects, in addition to the increased risk of type 2 diabetes, kidney failure, and muscle pain, which were already well-established, is memory loss.
While the memory loss is only documented in people over the age of 50, it doesn’t seem to be associated with any one age group beyond that more than another.
It does, however, go away after discontinuing the statin.

I have been on statin for about four years and experienced memory loss and muscle detoriatin, early this year I decided to stop taking LIPITOR and got polymyaligia from it, however I battled on and are getting back to normal by now./ It is almost criminal what those drug companies are doing!!!!

This is so true., have had several clients who have complained about their memory while still insisting that they have to take this poison because the doc says so. My question is , as a thinking person is How can the powers that be predict the number of cases of Alzheimers in the future if it is not caused by something that is being given to people?

I take Crestor-40 and notice some memory loss, muscle pain but, this is less than when I was on Lipitor 80.
Doc’s have very selective hearing… There’s a lot of it about!
I discovered this side effect around four years ago. At one visit to my GP, he forgot to put the statins on my prescription. I kept meaning to get around to ringing up the surgery to get a script, but not getting around to it. Then I noticed my memory was returning. I thought that my decreased memory was just age. So I didn’t do anything until my next visit to the doctor. In the meantime, I noticed another effect. I am a writer, and my ability to “organise” stories in my head had got slower and more difficult, but this effect also disappeared (over some weeks). I mentioned the memory thing to the doctor, who looked it up and said it had been a reported side effect. He tried another variety of statin, but it did the same thing. So I’m not on statins.
I think the doctors are pretty brassed off, but they’re also a bit wary of me. That’s because one of them explained to me that having a bit of memory wouldn’t do me much good if I had a stroke and lost a lot more of my brain function. My reply was “thank you for pointing that out, but I do need my reasoning and I consider that I am prepared to take that risk”. I think I may have also sneaked in something about the importance of taking a good ethical approach to prescription.
My mother has very advanced alveihmers disease we are fighting without the “Medical” fraternity, usung herbs with some success in slowing the advance & minor improvements. I believe she developed the disease after 20years on 8 different blood pressure meds and 21years of statins. Sadly she never had high colesterol but Dr had convinced her it would stop her having a stroke as her father had died from one. It gave her blood pressure then all the meds together had memory loss & confusion listed as side effects. Well she is the living proof of the side effects, a beautiful, healthy active artist living in a crippled body prisioner to a brain that no longer lets her communicate to those she loves, living in pain & fear.
