One of the top-selling blood pressure medicines and several others were recently linked to an increased risk in specific type of cancer.

While trying to reassure patients that the risk of developing cancer still outweighs the risk of not taking medication, researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research acknowledged that people who were taking certain blood pressure medications were indeed at increased risk of this cancer.

Those taking lisinopril, one of the most widely prescribed blood pressure medications, were at higher risk of developing melanoma in the squamous cells of the lips.

Research suggests that the medicine creates an oxidation process and creation of cancer-causing free radicals.

Other medications implicated in the study were hydrochlorothiazide and nifedipine.

Researchers mentioned nothing about how this risk doesn’t exist in a vacuum; instead of weighing the actual risk of the whole medication, taking into consideration ALL of the side effects and encouraging a more natural approach to beating high blood pressure, they instead maintained that it is safer to take the medicines and simply wear sunblock.
