Eating antioxidant foods or taking antioxidant supplements all help to eliminate heart disease and diabetes.

But recently scientists discovered a characteristic specific berries hold to turn on your body’s capability to boost its own antioxidant- making abilities.

The study, recently released from the School of Medicine at the University of Warwick in the UK, highlights a little-known protein that is activated by extracts in strawberries.

This healing protein, called Nrf2, is kicked into high gear within the body by these extracts and is responsible for generating antioxidant activity within the body.

The protein helps to decrease lipids in the blood. These are particularly harmful for diabetics, whose hearts are more susceptible to the damage of poorly metabolized blood lipids.

Berries of all kinds have been in the news recently for their many health benefits, specifically their anti-oxidant properties, and are in abundance during the summer.

Another benefit that makes strawberries the perfect addition to breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks is the high fiber content (3 grams per cup), which helps to balance the sugar for those who have to be mindful of fructose intake.

It has been shown in other studies that eating just a half cup of fresh or frozen strawberries once per day can counter post-meal glucose increases as well.
