The B-vitamin niacin may be important for maintaining high levels of good HDL cholesterol, reports a new study University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville found. HDL cholesterol is important because it helps clear out cholesterol build up in arteries.

Scientists have long known that supplementing with niacin helps increase HDL cholesterol levels. However, it was thought that niacin did its job by preventing HDL breakdown and release. This new research shows that niacin goes one step further by increasing HDL production in the intestine and liver by promoting the activity of a HDL cholesterol-making protein known as apolipoprotein-A.
