It’s commonly known that high doses of garlic can repel a first date’s chances of a kiss, but new research out of Australia’s University of Adelaide found that it may keep blood pressure away too.

In this study, scientist pooled together the results of 11 large studies, also known as a meta-analysis. They found that taking supplemental garlic significantly reduced blood pressure levels in adults with hypertension.

The researchers note that a specific compound in garlic known as allicin is responsible for garlic’s blood pressure lowering properties. They state that allicin relaxes blood vessels, driving down blood pressure.
