High blood pressure may not just be bad for your heart –it can impair the health of your brain as well. A study conducted by a National Institutes of Health found that those with high blood pressure had significantly faster cognitive decline than those with healthy blood pressure.
The study followed over 1,500 people over the course of 4-years and regularly tested their blood pressure and mental fitness. The researchers note that more in-depth testing in this study may have revealed even worse mental decline had it been conducted.
Blood pressure can influence blood pressure by impairing blood flow to the brain, increasing the loss of healthy brain cells.

I am 86. I have high blood pressure, I still drive, I dance, travel alone from Costa Rica to Florida 3 times a year and I THINK all my brain cells are still working.
Marylu you are doing great. Keep active!
Good for you and you must be eating the good green stuff
But well done you for living such a good healthy life
I agree with MaryLu & good for you Gal. I’m only 68 & you give me hope! I’m so tired of hearing how I have one foot in the the grave & the other on a bananna peel because I have the BIG BP. My Dad & Mom had the problem but drank like fish & smoked like chimnyes all thier lives. They died at 80 & 85 respectivly. Think that’s why? They both grew up during the depression or around that time & fatty foods like salarmi & the like wasn’t excluded from thier diets. Both had all thier aggies & thus far I still find those who tell me I’m not borderline mentaly either & mistake my age for someone 10-20 years younger.I drive a moter bike, sew, use a treadmill, do all my own shopping, housecleaning & billpaying online. I don’t drink or smoke so I guess MaryLu & I’ll live forever. My boyfriend died at 45 & my Mothers’ second husband was 25 years younger than she was. My 1st husband died at 45 & #2 at 57. Another boyfriend at 57.All of natural causes other than BP & they were all demented at the end.

My mother suffered from High BP since she was 60. She also suffered from heart failure and had a large thoracic aneurism. She died at 93 clear as a bell mentally. Her sister, who never had any problems with either blood pressure or heart, died at 93 having suffered dementia for several years. Surely many other factors need to be taken into account before the cause for dementia can be accurately determined.
When I was 70 my blood pressure shot up to 220/110 and I was very weak and sick. Had a hard time getting them to find out if something was causing it as they just wanted to give me pills. I finally found out that I had celiac disease which is a inflammatory reaction whenever I eat anything with gluten.. All the goodies like cinnamon rolls, brownies ,pasta, Wheaties, etc. and anything with flour in it contain gluten and so do most grains except corn and rice. The effect of celiac disease is to inflame the lining of the small intestine so you can’t absorb your vitamins and minerals. I had several trips to the ER with low electrolytes and HBP. I still had to take some pills but after going off gluten carefully for about a year now my BP is down.
I am 50, still active inspite of early diagnoise.
I am 75 and have been on medication for high blood pressure for the last 20 years. David and I have a large property to maintain so are always busy. We keep active, eat healthfully and hold a weekly DVD health lecture that also incorporates cooking classes, (except on school holidays). I have tried a number of natural remedies and they do help, but my doctor still insists that I need to remain on his medication.
Hi every body ,I hope every body injoy good health , I am 48 . My blood pressure goes up to 160/90 in the same day goes down to 110/50 I am warry about that ,but I will visit doctor . this new thing to me . what you advice me .
6 Fish oil caps daily and vitamin D are keeping my blood pressure at good levels. I go Ice skating daily. Keeping calm and daily quiet time are all helping to achieve good BP goals Age 65. Plenty of love!
My suggestion to zouka zoulfeqar is to try monitoring BP several times daily and see if some foods are causing these variations. Through logging my food intake I determined that I am sensitive to MSG and low levels of Omega 3.
I am 68 and until two months ago I used to have a similar problem. My blood pressure used to spike up to 220/110 for several hours and in the same day would go down to 105/60. I was very concerned particularly when three different medications were useless and four doctors in two different countries could not figure it out.
I use no medications, continue to exercise about an hour each day but I am now more vigilant about avoiding worchestershire, soy sauces etc. or anything that could be laced with MSG. I also have 2 tbsp ground flaxseed daily and a small serving (100g) of sardines or pink salmon every other day and can now count on my BP being somewhere between 110/70 to 150/90.
