Having a laugh or listening to your favorite band lowers blood pressure about as well as most prescription drugs, a Japanese research team discovered.

In this study, a group of older adults with high blood pressure were asked to visit a laboratory twice per month. Once there, the volunteers heard jokes , listed to music, and relaxed.

After the course of the 2-month period, subjects lowered their blood pressure by 6 point on average. The scientists note that this benefit is similar to losing 10 lbs. of excess body weight or decreasing sodium intake.
