Excess body fat interferes with the health of your mouth, a team of scientists from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine discovered.

In this study, 31 adults with obesity were examined for a battery of oral health indicators –half of which later underwent gastric bypass surgery.

Those that lost weight using gastric bypass improved the health of their gums –while those that maintained their weight saw no improvement.

The scientists note that obesity’s ability to boost inflammation levels may be a driving force behind fat’s ability to hurt oral health.
