Chronic insomnia makes people tired and irritable –and it may increase heart attack risk to boot—according to a research team from Norway.
The scientists investigated the connection between sleeping patterns and heart attack risk in a group of 50,000 men over the course of 10-years. They discovered that insomnia increased heart attack risk by approximately 45 percent –similar to smoking or being severely obese.
Scientists note that poor sleep may increase levels of inflammation in the blood, which can damage arteries and contribute to plaque formation.

Very interesting to say the least, I guess much like the way sleep apnoea plays havoc with one’s ability to function normally on a daily basis. Many years ago I worked rotating shifts, five days of earlies 7am-3pm, then five days of lates 3pm-10pm, then six days of nights 10pm-7am and this was five years of my normal life on the London Ambulance Service. I was young and bullet proof of course, even so it played bad tricks when I got a few days off. I left that profession but know of many guys who made that a life’s work and paid the price of an early death, mostly in their early fifties and that was a tragic consequence of doing a public service job, all of those dedicated men didn’t even experience a retirement.
