Probiotics –foods that contain high levels of “good” bacteria—may reduce blood cholesterol levels, according to a study published in the medical journal “PLos One.” In this study, Duke University scientists investigated the gut flora of 50 volunteers with elevated cholesterol levels. They discovered that those with high levels of healthy bacteria in the gut tended to have lower cholesterol levels than guts that were bacteria barren.

The scientists note that consuming probiotic-rich food such as yogurt and kefir may help improve overall gut health and may moderately reduce cholesterol levels. Bacteria in the gut help break down cholesterol in your intestine, reducing reabsorption.
