We get questions all the time about this diet or that diet, and generally, they are all related to the latest ‘breakthrough’ that claims to have discovered the secret to why people gain and store weight.  Upwards of two thirds of US adults, and a full third of US children are overweight or obese.

The truth, as is becoming evident through study after study, is that there are a lot of reasons for weight gain and are as varied as the people who struggle with it.

Folks are frequently after the quick and easy solutions for dropping the excess pounds, whether it is because of impatience or simply because other health complications make it critical for people to get the weight off quickly.

So it is that people head to the Internet to search for something quick and easy, and one item that has come up a lot is the hCG diet.

This is a diet which carries claims that a person using it can lose up to 30 pounds in 30 days.  That checks the quick box.

However, the easy part is a little trickier.  It involves injections of the female pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin.  There are some versions of the diet that also involve sub-lingual (under the tongue) drops, but it’s coming to light that there is very little of the hormone in the drops and pills, anyway.

The plan also requires that for at least 6 weeks, the dieter restrict him- or her-self to less than 500 or 600 calories a day and include mostly raw, fresh vegetables and fruits.

The theory is that because hCG is believed to be critical in how a developing embryo uses nutrients and processes fat from the mother’s body.  One of the studies that is referred to involves an observation of women in India who were malnourished but seemed to have otherwise healthy babies.

It was theorized that hCG makes the body use up fat reserves while maintaining muscle.  However, truth of weight loss is that no magic solution is going to help in the long run without specific lifestyle changes.

Without the hormone, restricting calories and cutting out the food you aren’t supposed to eat is going to result in weight loss.  That’s just a fact.  But restricting intake to such extreme levels will not only be nearly impossible to stick to, but it will almost surely cause serious vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Remember the study involved malnourished women.

Let alone that injecting hormones found in human urine can be a little off-putting.  And remember that the FDA doesn’t regulate the statements made by vitamin and supplement makers, so you are really taking a risk with not only your health but also your wallet.

There are easy ways to change how you eat and drink that are safe and will change the way your body works that are much safer than experimental injections and starvation diets.

The key is finding the solution that works for you that will balance the right amount of nutrition and hydration with body movement to maximize energy and burn the weight naturally and safely.
