Simply tossing out the salt shaker may not be enough for reducing high blood pressure levels, a research team from the Centers for Disease Control has found. In this study, they found that getting enough potassium –a mineral abundant in fresh fruits and vegetables—is just as important as limiting salt intake.

The research team also found a link between a combined high salt/low potassium diet and death from heart disease. Those that eat too much salt and not enough potassium raise their risk of a heart attack by approximately 50%, the study authors found.
