People put too much focus on fat and not enough emphasis on sugar when trying to lower high cholesterol levels, a new Tufts University research study found.

In this study, a group of 6,000 volunteers were asked to follow one of three diets –differing only in the levels of added table sugar. The lowest group consumed a paltry 3 tsp. of daily sugar while the highest sugar group downed an enormous 46 tsp. of sugar. The researchers found that levels of a certain type of blood cholesterol –triglycerides—shot up as sugar intake increased. Also, “good” HDL cholesterol dropped in the group that ate the most sugar.
