Going back to the input files of readers who offer suggestions, I recently found a few from readers who asked about supplements for men with ED. Specifically, there were two asking about cocoa.

This chocolate ingredient packs quite a powerful punch with our pleasure receptors, but one has to wonder…if cocoa helps men with ED is it because of this chemical reaction in our brains?

As I researched it, I discovered that while cocoa is touted as a great addition to the diet of men with ED, it isn’t because of the effect on the pleasure sensors in the brain.

It is actually because of the flavonoid compound that is in this plant. This is a very effective anti-oxidant that has been shown to be 3 times more concentrated than similar amounts of green tea and even red wine.

The magnesium in cocoa also helps to boost and repair blood vessels. Healthy blood flow is critical for attaining and maintaining erection, so finding nutritionally based supplements that improve blood vessel health is great.

Finally, cocoa also boosts the body’s nitric oxide production. “NO” has recently been gaining attention as a supplement for bodybuilders, runners, baseball players, and other athletes, because it boosts physical performance by dilating blood vessels.

For the body to be able to produce its own, especially after simply drinking a cup of delicious cocoa, this is a great benefit.

The flavonoids in cocoa have also been shown to help with diabetes and cholesterol. The problem with cocoa and these conditions, however, is the sugar and saturated fat that generally goes into making the chocolate, depending upon the kind eaten.

But the good news is that tasty ways of including cocoa in your diet are all over the place. Even if you don’t like dark chocolate yet, it is definitely worth developing a taste for it.

Or, mix in a little ground cocoa to some fat-free yogurt, sprinkle in your morning tea, and roll a banana in it. These are all ways to enjoy cocoa without adding a bunch of excess sugar and fat into your diet.

But if you prefer to have your cocoa hot, and drink it as a comfort beverage, then the following recipe may work wonders for both you and your partner just before bed (this isn’t for diabetics, though):

In a medium saucepan, stir and heat the following ingredients:

2 cups whole milk
1 medium bar of dark chocolate, shredded with a potato peeler
1 Tbs cocoa powder
¼ cup brandy (optional)

Stir all ingredients with a wire whisk gently and continuously until all the chocolate is melted and incorporated into the milk mixture.

This is similar to one of those old time favorites from ‘grandma’s’ old cookbooks, so nutritional info sort of goes by the wayside, but it’s generally okay since you won’t need more than 1 cup of this hot cocoa before you are relaxed and ready for bed.

Add cocoa in healthy ways, though, if you are going to be consuming it more than once or twice per week, as with the suggestions earlier.
