Very few treatments are currently available for fatty liver disease, particularly natural remedies.
But a recent study in the journal Obesity reveals how consuming a specific soup and shakes can drastically reduce your liver fat and increase its flexibility in weeks.
Approximately 2% of the adult population worldwide grapples with a condition called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), an advanced form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
This ailment arises when excess fat accumulates in the liver, resulting in inflammation and scarring.
If untreated, it can escalate to liver cirrhosis (scarred liver tissue) and increase the risk of other serious health complications such as heart disease. The primary recommendation for patients is weight loss. However, achieving enough weight loss to reduce liver fat and inflammation can be difficult.
The team behind this study developed the soups and shakes diet in order to determine whether it could help patients lose enough weight to improve their condition.
They enrolled 16 patients, all diagnosed with obesity, NASH, and moderate to advanced liver scarring. The group consisted of five females and eleven males.
The subjects embarked on a 12-week “soups and shakes” diet, consuming four specially formulated soups, shakes, or bars each day. This regimen provided around 880 daily calories and all essential vitamins and minerals.
Following this 12-week period, regular food was gradually reintroduced over the subsequent 12 weeks with the help of a dietitian.
At the beginning, at 12 weeks, and 24 weeks, participants were weighed, had blood tests and their blood pressure taken, and underwent two scans to evaluate the health of their liver, including the amount of inflammation, scarring, and fat deposits.
By the end of the study, 14 patients had successfully completed the program, losing an average of 15% of their body weight. This indicates surprisingly high adherence to the weight loss program.
Here are the findings:
-
1. The rapid weight loss was safe for participants, with only mild and temporary constipation reported.
2. Liver fat decreased by 13.1%, with 93% of participants showing a reduction of more than 30%.
3. 57% and 93% of participants showed a reduction of 19% on two different measurements of liver stiffness respectively.
4. Liver inflammation decreased across the board.
5. Significant reductions in blood pressure and blood sugar were reported, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease, a major concern for people with NASH.
These are some of the most significant improvements in fatty liver disease ever reported, better than the available drugs and rivaling the level of improvement observed after bariatric weight loss surgery.
But if cutting your diet down to 880 calories of soup and shakes per day is not triggering joy, then you’ll be thrilled to hear there are much easier, safer ways to permanently heal NAFLD in weeks and are even more effective than the soup and shakes diet.
