Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a lifestyle disease. It’s brought on by the food we eat in our modern Western diets.
According to a new study in the journal Nutrients, one type of food more than any other is the cause of most cases of NAFLD.
You must stop consuming this food or at least cut down on this food to reduce your risk of NAFLD.
Ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) have poor nutritional quality. They are characterized by high levels of fats, sugars, and salt and a lack of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Consuming UPFs excessively is associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
The study team sought to measure the association between UPF consumption and NAFLD occurrence. They also sought to investigate whether higher amounts of UPFs increased NAFLD risk.
They searched through medical journal databases to find studies on the relationship between the two. Only those studies with proper liver scans or biopsies were included.
The nine studies they selected for their final analysis involved a total of 60,961 participants.
The combined findings of the nine studies revealed the following:
-
1. Compared with low UPF intake, moderate intake was associated with a 3% higher risk of NAFLD.
2. Compared with low UPF intake, high intake was linked with a 42% higher risk of NAFLD.
3. NAFLD risk increased with UPF consumption.
Therefore, the consumption of UPFs is definitely an NAFLD risk. But why exactly is this the case?
-
1. UPFs are high in calories, which can lead to overeating and weight gain.
2. The high amounts of fats and refined carbohydrates in UPFs can increase fat levels in the body.
3. The excessive calories in UPFs can lead to an increase in fat deposits in the liver.
4. The high salt content in UPFs can lead to an increase in liver fat.
5. Adding artificial sweeteners and chemicals during food processing increases the risk of NAFLD.
You should definitely cut down on your processed food consumption to minimize your NAFLD risk.
