Even medical specialists agree that nail fungus is difficult to treat, as evidenced by the fact that prescription medicines are not terribly effective.
A new study in the Zagazig University Medical Journal out of Egypt, however, put an everyday oil (treated in a specific way) head-to-head with one of the most effective medical nail fungus treatments.
And this natural oil was a clear winner.
Ozonized olive oil is, as the name suggests, made by infusing a high concentration of ozone into normal olive oil.
Ozone is believed to have antibacterial and antifungal properties because it is so much more reactive than oxygen, which is why the researchers decided to test it on nail fungus.
As oils are great moisturizers, ozonized oils are often used in skincare. It is especially popular because ozone is completely natural: it is simply a gas composed of three oxygen atoms.
Tazarotene, however, is a prescription gel usually prescribed for acne, psoriasis, and other skin infections. Some previous studies listed in the new article’s literature review have found it to be effective against nail fungus.
In response to the previous research, the authors wanted to find out which out of ozonized olive oil or Tazarotene was best at curing nail fungus.
They recruited 32 subjects with nail fungus and divided them into two groups: one received ozonized olive oil to apply topically, and the other received 0.1% Tazarotene gel to apply in the same way.
They asked the participants to apply these treatments for 3 months and they followed them for 6 months to assess the improvements.
They used a clinical examination as well as a nail sample test before and after the treatment to evaluate improvements.
So which treatment worked best?
-
1. After the 3 months of treatment, they discovered that the fungus had cleared in 75% of the ozonized oil group compared with 56.25% in the Tazarotene group.
2. These improvements were maintained after 6 months and there was a further improvement in both groups.
3. Both treatments proved to be safe without any side effects such as rashes or irritation.
Ozonized olive oil is probably not available from your local supermarket or even health store, but specialist skincare providers and retailers of natural, healthy products should stock it. It is also available on Amazon.
