As with many disease processes, pharmaceutical giants are constantly on the march trying to come up with the newest drug with the catchiest name.
But they know, and hope you don’t, that most of life’s ailments can be eliminated with simple (but sometimes weird) foods already found in nature or as a supplement at the health food store.
Today’s focus is on one such “weird” food. And even though it’s not widely known, its benefits are wide-reaching and very powerful. And you can get it in every health food store.
Spirulina is a freshwater algae, blue-green in color. It is has alkalizing properties that studies have shown to have incredible power over a number of ailments, much to the chagrin of drug companies trying to treat the same diseases with their dangerous medications.
Here are just a few of the benefits and studies involving spirulina:
Spirulina seen to reduce high blood pressure
Researchers at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico’s biochemistry department in 2009 found that spirulina is a safe and effective vasodilator. Vasodilators literally dilate the blood vessels, softening them as they do. This has the effect of lowering blood pressure, which is the measurement of the force of blood against the vessel walls during and between heart beat pumps.
Spirulina lowers bad cholesterol while raising good cholesterol
A recent study conducted on rabbits and published in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology showed that the rabbits receiving spirulina supplements not only showed a reduction in triglycerides and total cholesterol, but their good cholesterol numbers even increased compared to the rabbits who weren’t fed spirulina.
Spirulina reduces atherosclerosis caused by bad diets
In the same study involving the rabbits, researchers also found that hardening of the arteries was reduced greatly with the introduction of spirulina to the diets. This is even after feeding the rabbits a high-fat diet, to which they typically are never exposed in the wild. This simulated the Western diet tendency to replace healthful choices of leafy greens, fruits and other vegetables with processed, high-fat diets.
