No, you didn’t read that wrong. It actually says that being overweight starves you. And it’s true. There are three key ways that being overweight is starving you, driving you to an early death. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
In today’s feature article we’re going to look at the three dangerous ways that obesity and metabolic syndrome (precursors to type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and early death) are actually starving you.
You might think that because you get more than enough to eat, which can be part of the obesity and diabetes problem, that there is no way you can possibly be starving. But you are.
# ONE
[adrotate group=”5″]The first starvation issue is an over-abundance of toxic and inflammation-producing chemicals in the body that prevent absorption of what you need to survive.
In today’s trans-fat and processed food-rich Western diets, we not only eat far too little of what we should be eating but we also eat far too much of what we should avoid at all costs. We’ve been hearing that for years. But what makes the forbidden foods so bad?
One of the key reasons is it is starving you of critical Omega-3 fatty acids. Ideally, our diets should contain about a 2:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 acids are responsible for eliminating free radicals and preventing disease. They balance cholesterol levels and serve a whole host of healthy functions.
Omega-6 fatty acids don’t work that way. In fact, they are more of an interference and contribute to high LDL (bad) cholesterol and other inflammation-producing reactions. The problem is, most diets (especially those of people with metabolic disorder) are completely out of whack, with numbers closer to 20:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3. This is another reason why many people with metabolic disorder and obesity also suffer from arthritis conditions.
Omega-6 fatty acids are bullies. They make it almost impossible for Omega-3 fatty acids to do their work and the results are catastrophic for most people with widespread inflammation, arthritis, heart disease, and high cholesterol.
# TWO
The second way being obese is starving you is that you aren’t getting the nutrients you need to function optimally. The effects of this are many and devastating.
First, if a person lets processed food dominate the plate, they are eating an incredible amount of empty calories. Processing involves heating (which destroys nutrients), irradiating (which destroys probiotics and nutrients), refining (which destroys nutrients) and supplementing (which makes a feeble attempt at adding back nutrients that don’t get absorbed anyway.)
The nutrients that are denatured and outright destroyed that are absolutely critical for muscle, bone, and blood vessel health include calcium, magnesium, zinc, all B vitamins, phosphorus, and even fiber. This isn’t even a complete list.
Many studies have been done to find out what is actually lost in processing otherwise healthy vegetables and fruits so they have a longer shelf life and they’ve found that more than 70% of the vitamin or nutrient is destroyed during the process. It can be closer to 95% for the more easily damaged vitamins.
As well, all these unhealthy, processed foods are replacing healthy, fresh, raw versions where optimum amounts of these desperately needed nutrients are found.
You are starving because you are deficient in many of the most important nutrients needed for good health. The only nutrient Western diets have an abundance of is sodium, which is no surprise.
# THREE
Finally, the third way in which people suffering from obesity and metabolic syndrome are starving is due to a lack of oxygen. This is caused by a variety of issues.
The most obvious is lack of exercise. Many people suffering metabolic syndrome also suffer from chronic, widespread pain and thus don’t have the tolerance or ability to exercise and increase available oxygen in the body.
An excess of visceral fat compresses blood vessels and organs, limiting the oxygen supply in the body, with devastating consequences. The body’s own mechanisms for eliminating toxins and fighting disease are then inhibited and the cycle worsens.
Having high blood pressure and high cholesterol limits the blood and blood vessels’ ability to transport needed nutrients and oxygen everywhere it’s needed. Nerve damage due to diabetes complications compounds these problems.
Additionally, lack of optimal oxygen to the brain is a problem that is covert and not seen for many years until memory problems or other neurological diseases start to crop up. It is unknown how many diseases, such as those in the dementia spectrum, may be caused or severely worsened by long-term oxygen deprivation.
These deficiencies are also responsible for other conditions such as vertigo, snoring, and even neck and back pain.
The easiest ways to overcome the starving obesity problem is to counteract all three problems at the same time. Luckily, solving the first and second problem is easily done in one step. Start replacing refined sugars like white cane and High Fructose Corn Syrup with natural sweeteners like honey.
Move on to replacing food that has been processed to death with fresher ingredients. Abandon canned food and start switching it out with frozen vegees. Over time this eliminates the processed poison for the much-needed fresh and raw versions, which is where the highest levels of all those critical nutrients are found and most easily absorbed.

Let us know what you think…do you think you or someone you know might be starving in a diet of abundance?
Excellent article. the on;y thing missing is where are Omega 3s found, and Omega 6s. I think Omega 3s are found in nuts, but what are the sources of all the extra Omega 6s?
Sound advice & information. I was going to suggest a diet which most of your staff respects, & uses; then I read the last info on the Reverse Diabetes type II, and Arthritis Programs, by Shelly & Jodi. I think I have those in the packaged programs I bought from you a while back. I had marked some sections for the food program or recipes & it is likely to be those programs.
I need to re-read, and print out the sections on foods and recipes! Thanks for all this new information, which I am interested in while I am still in the “change eating habits for better health” self program I have been on for a lot of years now. I had already rid my home of many of the worst offenders, the oils, hydrogenated oils, “bad whites”, remembering there are “good whites” still; limited meats to less fatty meat; no red meat whatsoever (my bones hurt when i eat beef or turkey, or bison, or lamb) That should give you an idea of which meats are affected the worst with antibiotics and steroids or harmones! I eat plenty fish, shell fish, chicken, oysters, venison, and pork: all of which my system will tolerate. I also started buying organic veggies when i can find them. I have always looked for local produce 1st, lucky to be living in a farming community!
Thank you for the greatest bit of information for better health. I have a lot of inflammation, so am eating to lower the levels of inflammation in my body; if that can be done! Great job; Great research; Great writing; Great Authors; Great business, Blue Heron Health News; still my favorite newsletter. I love that it is “soft sell”, and helpful more than threatening. I know the “bad” stuff is out there; I like the respect you give your readers! just jammin georgia, tonite
