The researchers from Brigham &#038; Women\u2019s Hospital in Boston collected data related to health, diet and behavior on 888 men and 1260 women who had knee osteoarthritis. <\/p>\n<p>Osteoarthritis, often called \u2018wear-and-tear arthritis\u2019 is the condition that occurs when the cartilage surrounding the bone wears down as a person ages. It can affect hands, knees, lower back, hips and neck. It can cause both pain and impaired joint functioning.<\/p>\n<p>Annual knee X-rays were performed on these patients for 4 years and the researchers measured the narrowing space between the bones in the knee joint in an effort to record disease progression.<\/p>\n<p>After eliminating risk factors like smoking, alcohol consumption and high body weight, they identified that people who consumed milk on a regular basis showed much slower progression of disease compared to those who didn\u2019t.  <\/p>\n<p>One glass or more of milk seemed to be the magic number to slow down arthritis.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers speculate that it\u2019s the calcium in the milk that helps in preventing bone and joint degeneration.<\/p>\n<p>90 percent of the volunteers consumed fat-free or low-fat milk and the study did not analyze the effect of other dairy products on arthritis progression.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/arthritis-guide\/\">But even if milk slows down arthritis, it doesn\u2019t cure it.
