While this makes water safe from germs, it also produces chemical byproducts called <strong>trihalomethanes (THMs)<\/strong>. And these chemicals cause chronic kidney disease (CKD), according to a new study in <em>JAMA Network Open<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers used data from the <strong>California Teachers Study<\/strong>, tracking <strong>89,320 women<\/strong> from the mid-1990s through 2018. They calculated each woman\u2019s long-term exposure to four types of THMs using annual water measurements from 1995\u20132005, also factoring in other toxins like uranium and arsenic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Findings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\n&#9679;\t<strong>6,242<\/strong> participants developed CKD during follow-up<\/p>\n<p>&#9679;\tAverage total THM: <strong>5.5 &#181;g\/L<\/strong> (top 5%: ~58 &#181;g\/L)<\/p>\n<p>&#9679;\tAverage brominated THM: <strong>2.7 &#181;g\/L<\/strong> (top 5%: 30 &#181;g\/L)<\/p>\n<p>&#9679;\tBrominated THM &#8805;30 &#181;g\/L &#8594; <strong>43% higher CKD risk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#9679;\tEven moderate exposure (75th percentile) &#8594; <strong>23% higher CKD risk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#9679;\tBrominated THMs contributed <strong>53%<\/strong> of total CKD risk, followed by uranium (<strong>35%<\/strong>), arsenic (<strong>6%<\/strong>), and chloroform (<strong>5%<\/strong>)\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Crucially, these risks appeared <strong>below<\/strong> the current U.S. safety limit for total THMs (80 &#181;g\/L).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Protect yourself:<\/strong><br \/>\nCheck your local water utility\u2019s annual quality report for chlorine and THM levels.
