But a new study published in Lasers in Medical Science<\/em> reveals how a specific type of laser, common in dermatology practices, has a 78.5% success rate for the toughest type of nail fungus.<\/p>\n That\u2019s huge!<\/p>\n Most people don’t realize how difficult nail fungus is to treat.<\/p>\n When fungus gets deep under your nail, it creates a protective barrier that medications struggle to penetrate.<\/p>\n Sometimes, the fungus forms what doctors call a dermatophytoma \u2014 essentially a concentrated mass of fungus that’s particularly resistant to treatment.<\/p>\n This is why researchers have been looking for alternative approaches.<\/p>\n Energy-based devices like the Nd:YAG laser represent a fresh approach.<\/p>\n This treatment uses light energy to generate heat.<\/p>\n The heat is then directed straight at your nailbed, where it targets and destroys the fungal layer.<\/p>\n The scientists conducted their study with 36 patients who had nail fungus.<\/p>\n Each person received between four and eight treatments with a laser, with sessions spaced one or two weeks apart.<\/p>\n The researchers then followed up with these patients at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment.<\/p>\n During each visit, they calculated something called the Onychomycosis Severity Index, a scoring system that measures how bad the nail fungus is.<\/p>\n This allowed them to track improvements over time.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s what they discovered:<\/p>\n • 33% of them were completely cured.<\/p>\n • Another 36.1% showed significant improvement but weren\u2019t completely cured.<\/p>\n • The biggest improvements happened at the 6-month and 12-month checkups.<\/p>\n • Patients who received five or more laser treatments had the best results.<\/p>\n • Surprisingly, patients with dermatophytoma (the tough fungal mass) had even better results \u2014 with 78.5% showing improvement after 12 months.<\/p>\n • Every patient tolerated the treatment well, despite some slight discomfort.<\/p>\n • All patients were satisfied with their results.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n This means that Nd:YAG laser treatment is a safe and effective option for treating nail fungus.<\/p>\n And the fact that it worked well on especially thick fungal layers is great news.<\/p>\n The Nd:YAG laser is a device commonly found in dermatology practices, so it may be available for you to try if you’re struggling with particularly stubborn nail fungus.<\/p>\n Not that we\u2019re competing or anything\u2026 but I\u2019ve actually had close to a 100% success rate with our readers fighting stubborn nail fungus.<\/p>\n How?<\/p>\n I use what I call a two-punch approach \u2014 with creams you can make yourself at home that fight it from the outside, and the right kind of food that fights it from the inside.<\/p>\n\n
