{"id":30498,"date":"2025-05-06T13:30:45","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T17:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/?p=30498"},"modified":"2025-05-06T07:52:30","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T11:52:30","slug":"how-healthy-alternatives-cause-hypothyroidism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/2025\/05\/06\/how-healthy-alternatives-cause-hypothyroidism\/","title":{"rendered":"How healthy alternatives cause Hypothyroidism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Hypothyroidism-390276665.jpg\" alt=\"How healthy alternatives cause Hypothyroidism\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9399\" \/>Health advocates have been busy banning various chemicals used in cleaning products and everyday items.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they recommend \u201chealthy\u201d alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Except that these healthy alternatives cause hypothyroidism \u2014 that\u2019s according to a new study in the journal <em>Environmental Science &#038; Technology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what happened with sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzenesulfonate (or OBS), which replaced perfluorooctanesulfonate (or PFOS) after health concerns emerged about the safety of the latter.<\/p>\n<p>PFOS is a \u201cforever chemical\u201d that is now widely banned.<\/p>\n<p>But is OBS really safe as a substitute?<\/p>\n<p>The authors of this study used two models to explore whether OBS could affect thyroid health \u2014 especially with long-term exposure to small amounts like those we might encounter in everyday life:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\n1.\tA mice model, in which mice were given low doses of OBS to mimic regular human exposure.<\/p>\n<p>2.\tIn a human model, thyroid cells grown in the lab were exposed to OBS to see how they would respond.\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>They then used a powerful set of scientific tools known as multiomics (which looks at genes, proteins, and metabolic changes) to get a detailed picture of what was happening inside the cells and tissues.<\/p>\n<p><em>What they discovered was concerning:<\/em><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\n1.\tMice exposed to low doses of OBS developed signs of primary hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland itself is damaged and underactive.<\/p>\n<p>2.\tIn the mice, the number of thyroid cells dropped, and the ones that remained showed abnormal function.<\/p>\n<p>3.\tIn human cells, OBS triggered a strange and newly discovered type of cell death called disulfidptosis, which damages cells by disrupting their internal chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>4.\tThe thyroid hormone production pathway was blocked in both mouse and human cells after OBS exposure.\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Unfortunately, these chemicals are very hard to avoid.<\/p>\n<p>They tend to be in non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, food packaging, and stain-resistant carpets and furniture.<\/p>\n<p>So, you can reduce your exposure by avoiding products marketed as \u201cstain-resistant,\u201d \u201cwaterproof,\u201d or \u201cgrease-proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, use glass, stainless steel, or cast-iron cookware instead of non-stick pans.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, check product labels and look for fluoro or perfluoro ingredients \u2014 especially in cleaning products, cosmetics, and food packaging.<\/p>\n<p>But OBS is only a small part of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve helped hundreds (probably thousands) of people to heal their hypothyroidism.<\/p>\n<p>And one of my tools has been to avoid everyday chemicals that cause hypothyroidism.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/health\/my-hypothyroidism-story-bhhn\/\">By doing this (plus a few more diet and lifestyle changes) almost everyone has been able to heal their hypothyroidism, usually within weeks.
