{"id":30493,"date":"2025-05-10T13:30:47","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T17:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/?p=30493"},"modified":"2025-05-09T05:36:20","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T09:36:20","slug":"strange-parkinsons-and-sleep-apnea-connection-discovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/2025\/05\/10\/strange-parkinsons-and-sleep-apnea-connection-discovered\/","title":{"rendered":"Strange Parkinson\u2019s and Sleep Apnea Connection Discovered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Parkinson-Disease-203066557.jpg\" alt=\"Strange Parkinson\u2019s and Sleep Apnea Connection Discovered\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9399\" \/>Parkinson\u2019s is a neural disease of the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep apnea happens when your breathing passages collapse while sleeping.<\/p>\n<p>What could these two possibly have in common?<\/p>\n<p>A lot, says a new study presented at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the connection is horrifying unless you make an important change right now.<\/p>\n<p>This study is one of the largest of its kind, pulling together more than 20 years of data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The research team identified 1.55 million veterans diagnosed with sleep apnea and 9.76 million of their peers without the condition.<\/p>\n<p>They then tracked how many people went on to develop Parkinson\u2019s disease over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>They also checked who received treatment for sleep apnea using a CPAP machine, which helps keep the airway open during sleep.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers made sure to balance factors like age, gender, race, smoking status, and even the risk of dying from other causes to ensure a fair comparison.<\/p>\n<p><em>Here\u2019s what they found:<\/em><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\n1.\tPeople with sleep apnea had a significantly higher risk of developing Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>2.\tMore precisely, there were 1.8 more cases of Parkinson\u2019s per 1,000 people five years after sleep apnea diagnosis compared to healthy sleepers.<\/p>\n<p>3.\tOnly about 10% of sleep apnea patients had clear records of CPAP use.<\/p>\n<p>4.\tThose who started CPAP treatment within two years of their sleep apnea diagnosis had 2.3 fewer cases of Parkinson&#8217;s per 1,000 people five years later compared to those who didn&#8217;t use CPAP.<\/p>\n<p>5.\tBut people who started CPAP more than two years later saw no benefit; their Parkinson\u2019s risk stayed the same as those who never used CPAP.\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Unlike our genetic makeup, this is one risk factor for Parkinson&#8217;s disease that we can control \u2014 so long as we start the treatment early enough.<\/p>\n<p><em>But time is of the essence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the problems with CPAP is, however, that people don\u2019t use them.<\/p>\n<p>If you have one, you probably throw it off in the middle of the night or find it too uncomfortable to use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The good news is that you can eliminate snoring and sleep apnea as soon as tonight using a <a href=\"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/health\/stop-snoring-exercise-program-sl-2017-3-19\/\">simple 3-minute throat exercise explained here\u2026<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And if you\u2019ve already been diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease, then you can make simple lifestyle changes \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/health\/my-parkinsons-bhhn\/\">explained here \u2014 that prevent your Parkinson\u2019s from progressing\u2026 it can even reverse your symptoms\u2026<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parkinson\u2019s is a neural disease of the brain.
