How? By shining a specific light on their fungus. <\/p>\n
The best part is that you can do this today at home.<\/p>\n
The authors of this study decided to try photodynamic therapy (PDT) with hypericin on three subjects to see how well it worked.<\/p>\n
Before explaining the therapy, let\u2019s first look at the results.<\/p>\n
What is photodynamic therapy?<\/p>\n
In PDT, a photosensitizing agent is applied to the target area, and then the area is exposed to a specific wavelength of light, typically in the blue or red spectrum. <\/p>\n
The light activates the photosensitizer to produce reactive oxygen species that can damage or destroy nearby cells.<\/p>\n
A photosensitizing agent is any chemical compound that becomes active and produces reactive oxygen species when exposed to light of a specific wavelength.<\/p>\n
In this study, hypericin was used as a photosensitizing agent before the application of light to the nails. Hypericin is perfectly natural, as it is extracted from the St. John\u2019s Wort plant.<\/p>\n
While it will almost certainly be more effective if done by a specialist, you can do this at home with the right equipment.<\/p>\n
You will first have to take a St. John\u2019s Wort supplement for a few days to ensure that it builds up in your body.<\/p>\n
Then you will need either a red light therapy or a blue light therapy device. The most common devices can emit both red and blue light.<\/p>\n
Aiming the light directly on your nails should activate the St. John\u2019s Wort, which activates reactive oxygen species to kill the nail fungus.<\/p>\n
Since this study was performed on only three subjects, the results must be confirmed by larger future studies before they can be taken seriously.<\/p>\n
