{"id":13927,"date":"2016-04-30T13:30:17","date_gmt":"2016-04-30T17:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/?p=13927"},"modified":"2016-04-30T01:11:29","modified_gmt":"2016-04-30T05:11:29","slug":"high-blood-pressure-and-dementia-connection-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/2016\/04\/30\/high-blood-pressure-and-dementia-connection-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"High Blood Pressure and Dementia Connection Explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/HighBP_10392971_s-2015.jpg\" alt=\"High Blood Pressure and Dementia Connection Explained\" width=\"267\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9399\" \/>The journal <em>Stroke<\/em> has just published a study on the connection between high blood pressure and dementia conducted by a team of scientists led by the UC Davis School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does this connection give us a way to detect dementia 20-30 years before it strikes, it (more importantly) leads us to a solid cure for both high blood pressure and early onset of memory loss and dementia.<\/p>\n<p>To be more precise, the study traced the connection from lifestyle, to high blood pressure, to atherosclerosis, to a decrease in brain matter.<\/p>\n<p>For data, they used health statistics from about 1,900 people whose information was collected by the Framingham Heart Study. <\/p>\n<p>They considered three important test scores: <\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\tan arterial tonometry measurement of blood pressure<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\ta carotid femoral pulse wave velocity measurement of artery hardening (atherosclerosis)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\tan MRI brain scan as a measurement of brain volume and structure.<br \/>\nThey found that, compared with people with normal arterial structure, those with hardened arteries had higher blood pressure, less white brain matter, and structurally damaged grey brain matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Using this info the researchers speculated the following connection:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\tLifestyle factors like high cholesterol diets and lack of exercise cause both high blood pressure and a buildup of plaque in your arteries.<\/p>\n<p>2.\tThis causes your arteries to harden or stiffen.<\/p>\n<p>3.\tStiff arteries further increase blood pressure, because your heart must pump much harder to get blood through these inflexible plaque-clogged arteries.<\/p>\n<p>4.\tTogether, all this arterial damage restricts the blood flow to your organs, including your brain.<\/p>\n<p>5.\tInsufficient blood flow to the brain then causes the white and grey matter to atrophy.<\/p>\n<p>This shows us that lowering blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health is essential to our cognitive function later on.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blueheronhealthnews.com\/health\/?page_id=472\">Which gives you one more reason to do everything in your power to lower your blood pressure.
