This Popular Drink Doubles Stroke RiskHigh blood pressure and type 2 diabetes have been considered the two major risk factors for suffering stroke and/or heart attack.

But a new study published in the journal Stroke reveals that one particular popular drink contributes to stroke more drastically than high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

In fact, drinking it doubles your stroke risk!

This is especially concerning since this drink is often considered “heart healthy” and even recommended by doctors.

It’s often recommended that people consume a few glasses of wine throughout the week for improved heart health. New research from St. Anne’s Hospital, Brno, Czech Republic, may however put this into question.

Researchers used data from a large study of twins born between 1886 and 1925. A total of 11,644 individuals reported on their alcohol consumption between the ages of 45 and 55. This information was then compared to the incidence of stroke later in life.

Long story short: those who consumed two drinks or more per day during their midlife years were twice as likely to suffer a stroke before the age of 75 compared to those who drank less than half a drink per day on average.

So according to the study, having two drinks or more per day in mid-life is riskier for stroke before 75 than having high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.

But it changes after 75. Then, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes become bigger risk factors. It’s therefore extremely important to tackle these diseases early on.
