Forget everything you’ve learnt about high blood pressure so far, as a new study, published in the European Heart Journal, reveals a terrifying reality that puts 75% of the population at risk.

The authors of this new study wanted to know what blood pressure scores at the ages of 50, 60, and 70 made dementia more likely in subsequent years.

They analyzed the medical information of 8,639 people, collected by the Whitehall II study.

At the beginning of the study in 1985, the subjects were between ages 33 and 55, and their blood pressure was measured every six years. These were 1985, 1991, 1997, and 2003.

By 2017, 385 of these subjects had developed dementia, and the researchers were in a good position to see how blood pressure was related to dementia development over the years.

The good news is that those who only developed high blood pressure in their 60s or 70s were not at any greater risk of dementia later on.

But those who already had blood pressure at 130 mmHg at 50 were 45% more likely to develop dementia.

A blood pressure of130 mmHg was once considered a borderline hypertension. But this, along with other new studies, have forced the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and nine other health organizations to lower their guidelines to strictly focus on getting your blood pressure below 130/80, preferably 120/80.
