A new study reveals a “healthy” nutrient that we get from a specific type of food drastically increases your risk of stroke and heart attack… much more than high cholesterol.

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic theorized that a substance called trimethylamine N-oxide, which is produced by some of our gut bacteria, increases our risk of stroke, heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases.

To test their theory, they used choline.

Choline is an essential nutrient for our brain and muscle function as well as energy level. But sometimes, people have too much of it, which raises the trimethylamine N-oxide level in our bodies.

Choline is found in high doses in beef liver, salmon, chickpeas, split peas, navy beans, eggs, beef, poultry, cauliflower, milk, Brussels sprouts and many other foods.

The researchers supplemented 18 people with choline.

The trimethylamine N-oxide levels in all 18 of their participants increased tenfold, proving that choline definitely skyrocketed this potentially harmful chemical.

When they tested their participant’s blood, they found that it was more glutinous than usual and more likely to clot, which clearly increases the risk of heart attack.

Now does this mean you should avoid choline?

No! First of all, it’s an essential nutrient for so many functions of your body. And you’re more likely to be deprived of it than consuming too much.

Second, many of the foods including choline are very healthy. So, avoiding these good foods would limit your consumption of a great diet.

But, you should absolutely not supplement with choline without a blood sample proving you’re deprived of it. And even then, it’s always better to just adjust your diet.
