These High Blood Pressure Drugs Double Your Cancer RiskOne of the most popular kinds of high blood pressure medications is in the spotlight recently due to its alarmingly increased risk of causing a person to develop cancer, says news from JAMA Internal Medicine.

The recent study findings highlight yet another dangerous side effect of these popular blood pressure medicines.

In research out of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center that was recently published in JAMA Internal Medicine, scientists revealed that women who took calcium channel blockers for controlling blood pressure had an alarmingly high risk of developing breast cancer.

What the scientists discovered was that those who took the calcium channel blockers were developing invasive ductal and invasive lobular cancers at a rate of 2.5 times their peers, when the medicines were taken for a period of ten years.

Calcium channel blockers reduce hypertension by dilating the blood vessels because they inhibit the flow of calcium into muscle cells. Changing the way cells function are what some scientists believe is the reason they are more likely to cause the cells to malfunction and become cancerous.

Many scientists looking at the study agree that more work and research should be done to look at the long-term use of these blood pressure medications, to see if there are any other serious cancer correlations that should be considered when weighing whether or not to start on a pharmaceutical.
