Reverse Your Brain's Aging by up to 17 Years in 12 WeeksDr. Majid Fotuhi, a world-renowned expert in brain health and Alzheimer’s disease prevention, published an article in a recent edition of the Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease that proved that you literally have a choice whether to grow or shrink your brain as you age.

Together with colleagues from several other American universities, they put 127 participants with an average age of 70 through a 12-week brain-training program.
All participants had been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment beforehand.
Amazingly, over 84% of them of them demonstrated significant improvement in memory and learning only a few weeks later.

Participants were then given three sets of interventions for 5 hours a week over a 12-week period.

The training program consisted of cognitive stimulation, meditation, stress management techniques, and information about the Mediterranean diet, Omega three supplements, and fitness.

Memory and learning skills weren’t the only improvements.

MRI scans proved that 53 percent also experienced an increase in the size of the hippocampus – the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory.

A further 17.6 percent experienced no more of the early Alzheimer’s symptoms they had before.

This proves that a personalized Brain Fitness Program can improve learning and memory and either halt the deterioration or grow the size and brain matter density of hippocampus in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment.

If you don’t appreciate how incredible this is, here are some more statistics.
The average person’s hippocampus atrophies by 0.5 percent every year after the age of 50. This means that you lose 10 percent of your hippocampus between ages 50 and 70.

This hippocampal decline is accompanied by an equivalent deterioration in your cognitive abilities.

In this study, the average subject’s hippocampus grew by three percent in three months, meaning that they reversed six years of brain aging in only a quarter of one year.

The best result was one participant whose hippocampus expanded by 8.6 percent, undoing all the age-related damage of the past 17 years!

When the scientists repeated the MRI scans one year later, the participants had either further expanded or maintained the expansion of their brains.

This shows that we have a choice what happens to our brains.

If you choose to do plenty of learning and memory exercises, follow a daily exercise program, control your stress levels, and eat a healthy diet with lots of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, you might be able to hang onto your cognitive abilities as you age.
