To their surprise, the results showed the exact opposite. Having an extra layer of fat tissues around the heart actually protects it.

You see, when free radicals (which cause inflammation, leading to plaque buildup) attack the heart’s arteries, the heart vessels send out an emergency 911 call to the fat surrounding the heart.

The fat responds by sending a troop of protective antioxidants that fight inflammation and remove plaque, therefore preventing heart attack.

This may explain previous studies showing that overweight people tend to survive heart attack more often than slimmer people.

Now this is not to say that being obese is good for your heart. For one, it’s a fact that those who are overweight tend to suffer heart attack more frequently than those who are not overweight.

It’s also only the specific fat surrounding the heart that has this protective mechanism. Belly fat, for example, multiplies your risk of heart attack.
