Thousands of people are misdiagnosed with high blood pressure every year. And thousands have high blood pressure without knowing it. In-between are those with high blood pressure but not the right numbers.
This is because doctors, nurses and patients themselves don’t measure blood pressure in the right way. And results in over-treatments with drugs and lethal side effects.
That’s why today I’m giving you six tips to get your blood pressure readings 100% accurate.
1) Stick to the routine: For best results take your blood pressure three times a day, always around the same time. Blood pressure is usually lowest early in the morning and gradually rises over the day.
2) Keep away from tobacco, caffeine, and exercise: Before taking your measurements, make sure that you haven’t exercised or consumed tobacco or caffeine at least an hour prior to it. All these factors can cause the blood pressure to spike temporarily, giving you inaccurate readings.
3) Go to the bathroom if you have to: There’s no point in measuring your blood pressure while trying hard to hold your urine, because a full bladder can cause nearly a 10 to 15 mm Hg rise in blood pressure readings.
4) Be relaxed while you take the readings: Feeling anxious? Or stressed after running around the mall? It’s not the best time to take your blood pressure readings. Calm down- and sit with your feet touching the ground, keep your legs uncrossed, and keep the arm and cuff at heart level. Apparently, all these factors can affect systolic pressure by 2 to 10 mm Hg.
5) Place cuff on bare skin: This seemingly simple tip can cause a difference of about 40 mm Hg. No kidding! Make sure you place the cuff on your bare arm and not over clothing. In a research study, it was found that there were variations in the blood pressure reading when taken on the bare arm versus clothed arm. This can be due to the difference in transmission of pulse wave from arm to cuff.
6) Cut down on the chatting: While chatting away to a friend might seem like a good way to relax while taking the readings, it apparently doesn’t work that way! Talking, supposedly, raises blood pressure by 10 to 15 mm Hg.
And now that you’ve measured your blood pressure accurately, what should you do if it’s too high?
Your six points are valid. There must be a consistency of timing and prior activities to taking measurements. When I walk to my doctor’s office and he takes the pressure, there is a great deal of difference the pressures according to whether I walk briskly or loiter; to whether I am seen immediately or have to wait; to whether I see him in an interview rom upstairs or on the found floor. When I take it at home, at dawn and on retiring, how I slept and how long ago I ate.
While I found the exercises you (Christian) recommend do absolutely nothing for me (except send me to sleep!) breathing deeply and slowly for twenty breaths while at the same time blanking all thought from the mind consistently and almost invariably lowers pressures from 160-190/90-110 to 100-135/65-80 (measurements over 4 weeks). However, a few days ago the following was recorded:
Time Systolic Diastolic Exercises
0649 175 96 Woke, no exercise
0655 138 77 20 slow, deep breaths and exhale slowly
0719 146 75 20 slow, deep breaths and exhale slowly
146 is just within the NICE criterion for hypertension. Now, why, when I wals lying tranquilly in my bed after the second, fairly satisfactory reading, did the systolic pressure rise?
No answer is required. Blood pressure varies widely depending on your activity, physical and mental states. Stress, both physical and mental invariably raises it. Sickness accompanied by congestion raises it. So does gout and the conditions preceding gout (when the best action is to drink a pint of water, go for a brisk walk of a mile at least and then lie flat and put your feet up as high as possible for at least a quarter of an hour to drain blood from the toes so that the uric acid is drained off with it.
Excellent information something we should all be aware of; if not for yourself but for friends and or relatives.
thats educative just that it appears d medical practisionals seem not to be patient enough to attend to clients
Am always encouraged by amount of research on this dreadful ailment. Continue. Can I buy the product through Western union?
I agree, being in my Dr. office where the “Help” always seem to be irritated, impatient, does raise B.P.They asking question, after question, no relaxing. I think they are all told to do this, in order to see a high reading, so they won’t HAVE to ADMIT, I really DO NOT NEED this Presciption they PUSH.they are PUSHED, TRAINED by DRUG COMPANIES to do this. I HATE GOING TO an INTERNIST. THEY DON’t want anyone to get OFF THESE DANGEREOUS ADDICTVE DRUGS, called MEDICATIONS!! And last time, getting there, the construction cutting me off from getting near the Hosp. I nearly turned & went home. Also, my worst problem causing B.P. to rise, is IBS. I must do this on my OWN. No Dr. or anyone knows a single thing about my Irritable Bowels, & B.P. drugs cause this problem to be MUCH,MUCH worse. One Pill @ one time nearly killed me
I seem to be doing it in the right way already.
