When you are asked to think of a place filled with noise and traffic, what comes to your mind? Construction sites? Sure. What about major roadways? Of course!

It turns out that the new study has identified this as a significant risk factors for high blood pressure.

The researchers looked at the data of 5,400 postmenopausal women with hypertension, obtained from the Women’s’ Health Initiative reports.

They took into account all other major factors like body mass index, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, race, ethnicity, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, education, household income and socio-economic status.

After all other factors were taken into consideration, the researchers found that those who lived within 100 meters of a major roadway were 23 percent more likely to have high blood pressure, compared to those who lived at least a kilometer away.

As we know, being closer to a major roadway means higher exposure to high levels of noise and pollution. The major roadways include freeways, freeway ramps and major arterial roads.
