Medical records claim that there has been many advances introduced to reduce the incidence of heart attacks. Yet, the results of a research study conducted in Yale University shows that there has been really no difference in the heart attack rates in young and middle-aged population.

A team of researchers analyzed data from about 231,000 hospital records in patients between the ages of 30 and 54. The data was collected from a period of 2001 to 2010.

According to the data, both men and women in that age group were hospitalized for heart attacks just about as often ten years ago as they did in 2010.

The researchers observed that while women comprised only a quarter of the population admitted for heart problems, they were more likely to die of heart attacks than men. Similarly, women tend to take longer to recover from a heart attack and remain hospitalized for a longer time. African-American women were in particular found to be more susceptible to die due to heart attack.

The team has emphasized that middle-aged women are particularly in higher risk because they don’t tend to take the symptoms of a heart attack seriously. Also, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are sometimes ignored. It is the general assumption that heart attack is a problem that is common only in old-aged men.
