Vitamin CWhen a person receives the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, it can be very frustrating. It can even stimulate an anxiety reaction, compounding an already dangerous co-condition that occurs in almost 98% of type 2 diabetes sufferers: high blood pressure.

Since the two conditions go hand-in-hand, it would seem that a solution resolving one would also mitigate the trouble posed by the other.

In recent trials looking at how a cheap, common vitamin supplement affects type 2 diabetes, researchers have found that complications can be reduced, and in many cases eliminated, just by increasing this one daily vitamin.

Recently, new evidence of benefits of a crucial vitamin has emerged that shows it can eliminate the complication of anxiety (and indirectly then, high blood pressure) for people with type 2 diabetes.

The study, published in the online journal Green Med Info, looked at the effects of supplemental vitamin C on people with type 2 diabetes, specifically with respect to its impact on stress and anxiety.

The study cited some of the problems that are associated with type two diabetes, highlighting oxidative stress as an all-too-common problem. Oxidative stress is the imbalance between an over-production of free radicals and the body’s inability to keep up with eliminating them.

Free radicals are the destructive little buggers that rampage through the body like zombies looking for a meal…they strip healthy atoms of their electrons in their zeal to balance themselves. Doing this creates more free radicals, and the carnage continues, leaving a swath of cell destruction in their wake.

This destruction can impact all the body’s systems, including the nervous system, causing elevated anxiety. Type 2 diabetes already causes biological stress on the body’s organs and blood vessels, increasing blood pressure. But anxiety throws fuel to the fire by increasing blood pressure as a result of added anxiety. The destructive cycle can be hard to control.

However, the researchers found that the very inexpensive and easy-to-find vitamin C can eliminate these complications, since it “donates” electrons to the free radicals, ending their destruction.

This is where the term “antioxidant” derives from- it is an opponent of the oxidation of molecules in the body. Once that stream of dominoes is no longer at risk of falling over, anxiety (and by extension, high blood pressure) are eliminated along with it.

This is just what the researchers saw in the study, proving that sometimes the natural solutions can be the safest and most effective, especially since they don’t carry the destructive side effects of the prescription medications.
